Mipha's Lightscale Trident
We are thrilled to showcase one of our favorite models and prop commissions to date – Mipha's trident from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild! This was actually one of the first large props we ever modeled for our store and we're so proud of how it turned out. The trident's intricate geometry made it a tricky print, but after some model edits and a few prototypes, we found an easy way to get the head prints to succeed every time.
Once the prop was fully printed and assembled, we moved on to finishing and painting it. We experimented with ways to split the prop apart for travel and con-safety, as we wanted it to fit within con weapons guidelines. Ultimately, we settled on a pressure-fit technique that uses metal rods and foam to create a tight, wobble-free fit that allows cosplayers to align the details of the prop perfectly. We were worried that adding threads could misalign details, so we opted for this method instead.
One of our favorite details of the prop is the "wave" details at the base of the trident head. Instead of painting these details, we chose to incorporate resin to create the blue-yellow-pink gradient and play with the watery design language of the prop. We dripped resin into the recesses, allowing us to easily and effectively create the gradient without worrying about paint chipping or smudging.
Overall, we are extremely pleased with how Mipha's trident turned out. It was a labor of love and a true collaboration between our team and the client. We're so happy that we were able to bring this prop to life and create something that our client was thrilled with. The trident is now one of our most popular models, and we've sold several printed kits since its release. We can't wait to see what other props and models we'll be commissioned to create in the future!
